Our mother, Shirley Ellis (December 15, 1920 – April 30, 2021), was a retired Registered Nurse and served as the matriarch of our family until her passing in 2021. She is remembered for her strength, compassion, and steady presence, which guided and supported the family through many generations. Her legacy of care and dedication remains at the heart of the family she helped nurture and hold together.
Shirley Shaw, 1920 to 1940
Shirley was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, in 1920, where she later entered nursing training and began her path toward becoming a Registered Nurse. In 1945, she moved to Vancouver to continue her nursing career at Shaughnessy Hospital, where she gained valuable experience in patient care and hospital service during a pivotal time in her profession.
1940 to 1950
In 1949, she married Dick Ellis, and in 1950, the couple moved to Victoria, where they built their life together and raised their family. Shirley’s dedication to nursing, combined with her strength, compassion, and steady presence, became a defining part of her life. She is remembered not only for her professional commitment to healthcare but also for the warmth and care she brought to her family and community throughout her life.
